Emergency Patients
What Is Considered a Dental Emergency?
A dental emergency is any condition involving significant pain, infection, trauma, or damage to a tooth or surrounding tissues that requires prompt attention.
Common dental emergencies include:
Severe Toothaches
Persistent or intense tooth pain may indicate infection, decay, nerve damage, or another underlying issue that requires treatment.
Swelling of the Gums, Face, or Jaw
Swelling can be a sign of infection and should be evaluated as soon as possible.
Dental Abscesses
An abscess is a serious infection that can spread if left untreated. Symptoms may include pain, swelling, drainage, or a bad taste in your mouth.
Broken, Cracked, or Fractured Teeth
Damaged teeth can be painful and vulnerable to infection if treatment is delayed.
Knocked-Out Teeth
If a permanent tooth is knocked out, immediate care may increase the chances of saving the tooth.
Lost Crowns, Bridges, or Fillings
When dental restorations become loose or fall out, the affected tooth may become sensitive, painful, or susceptible to further damage.
Dental Trauma
Sports injuries, falls, accidents, and other impacts to the mouth should be evaluated promptly, even if symptoms appear minor initially.
Sudden Sensitivity or Pain When Chewing
New or worsening discomfort may indicate a crack, infection, or other dental problem that requires treatment.
What Is NOT Usually a Dental Emergency?
While some dental concerns should be addressed promptly, they may not require immediate emergency treatment.
Non-emergency dental concerns often include:
- Mild tooth sensitivity
- Small chips that do not cause pain
- Food trapped between teeth
- Minor gum irritation
- A loose retainer or nightguard
- Cosmetic concerns
- Routine cleanings and examinations
- Small cavities without pain
